Obituary

Larry was born in Calgary on April 11, 1947, and passed away on March 29, 2024.

He was the youngest of 7 siblings raised on a farm in Strathmore.

Larry joined the Calgary Fire Department in 1969 where he worked in many of the busiest firehalls in the city.

He worked his way up to Captain and then District Chief on “B” Platoon. He retired in 2002.
What Larry would say about the Fire department was, “It was the best job in the world 99% of the time.” He was well respected by all his peers.

When he became a friend of Bill W. in 1997, he was to meet his soul mate Pat and they were married in October of 2001. This began a life of happiness and laughter.

Larry had a heart of Gold and would give you anything he had. He was an excellent listener and very wise. Always kind and honest, he had helped many men and women with their journey of sobriety. The respect that all who knew had for him and love for him was very evident up to his last day.

Larry was tired. He had a very rough time the last 3 years. His health was declining very rapidly, and he passed peacefully at home. The pain is gone - time to rest.

Larry is survived by his soul mate Pat, his daughter Rhonda (Joe), son Curt and daughter Denise (Dean), 5 Beautiful grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren, one Brother Alan (Gerta), and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of the Sylvan Lake Funeral Home, 5019 47A Ave., Sylvan Lake. A reception will follow at the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch 212, 4916 50 Ave., Sylvan Lake.

Donations can be made in Larry’s name to Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society, 2234 30 Avenue NE, Calgary, Alberta, T2E 7K9.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Pat, l would like to send my sincerest sympathy to you and your family for the loss of a great person. Although we have never personally met, l would like you to know l met Larry back in 1970 when l was young and unsure of my career path. It was thanks to Larry's encouragement that l put in an application for the C.F.D. Now l don't know what other career opportunities might have come along; all l do know without Larry's help l never would have found the job l loved. May he rest in peace knowing he made a huge difference in my life's career path.

Grumpa Pita was such an incredible man and such an inspiration. He came through so many struggles and hardships while still helping those around him. He loved the kids so much and they loved him a lot, he was not a huge kid person but for me and the kids he was everything. We will miss him greatly but know he is always with us. He has lots of good people up there whom I’m sure were so happy to see him and help him get settled. We love you grandma and will be here for you through this journey.
